Monash University is a dynamic university with a distinguished global reputation. With five campuses in Australia Monash is home to approximately 65,000 students and 17,000 staff.
Established in Melbourne in 1958 Monash has achieved an enviable national and international reputation for research and teaching excellence and is ranked in the top 1 per cent of world universities.
Monash is Australia’s largest university and is a founding member of the Group of Eight, the coalition of Australia’s most prestigious research-intensive universities.
Monash University has a legislative and moral responsibility to ensure that employees, students, contractors and visitors are exposed to a safe and healthy environment.
This involves the identification and control of hazards and associated risks, as well as the accurate recording of all incidents across multiple campuses, including those involving near-misses and injuries.
Prior to 2014 staff and students of Monash University were required to report incidents and hazards via a paper-based reporting system.
An increase in safety awareness, culture and maturing of systems meant that the old paper based system became inefficient and cumbersome to employ, manage and report against.
As a result hazards and incidents were not being recorded in a timely manner and extensive delays were experienced between the event and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) receiving reports and the subsequent implementation of appropriate corrective actions.
In addition the production of meaningful and accurate reports to managers, as well as the recording of hazard and incident details, was inhibited by the heavily manual process, involving intensive manual input by OHS personnel, which may also have led to errors.
Monash University purchased PAN Software’s RiskWare (branded as SARAH- Safety and Risk Analysis Hub) to streamline incident and hazard reporting.
The software selection process by Monash involved assessing various products on the market. Monash OHS embarked on contacting other universities and industry sectors who were using the PAN software package to identify and confirm that the software was meeting their business needs.
The major reason Monash selected RiskWare was its user friendly and intuitive interface together with the excellent and professional support offered by PAN Software.
"Monash University selected RiskWare as it is a user friendly and intuitive software package that meets the University's needs. It provides real-time information and comprehensive reporting tools. The ability to expand the suite to include other modules such as Enterprise Risk, Audit and WHS Risk allows Monash to effectively and reliably manage its OHS processes"

Data from RiskWare allows Monash OHS to analyse trends and identify areas of concern. This in turn allows for specialist programs and training to be implemented as a part of the action plan and controls to mitigate serious occurrences and improve safety outcomes for staff, students, contractors, and visitors.
